It’s been a very LONG time since I posted on my blog. I’ve missed this!
I wanted to talk about the power of language and how it can be a form of toxicity for you and the people around you. What I mean by that, is anything you speak into existence, has an impact on the people who are listening and paying attention.
Generally speaking, wherever you are, and people are listening to you, they are picking up on verbal and non-verbal cues, you are most likely judged (this happens all the time) and people are determining inside their brains just how valid your information is to them. Let’s face it; everyone has a hidden agenda, right? Well, not all of us. We are easily swayed by what people have to say and putting a value on it as if it’s true.
My world consists of excitement, chaos, disruption, love, kindness, empathy, compassion, strategy, choice, fulfillment, uncertainty, risk, learning, ambition, and adventure to name a few. My world is a roller coaster, and I am not one to stay somewhere too long so that I’m comfortable and never want to leave. I enjoy the thrill, and I like to learn what I need to learn from a professional, personal and spiritual perspective, and use that for my next big thing. Having said all of that, I see the world a bit differently than I did a few years ago and navigating the “real” world is different than what I was brought up to know. What I stand for is very different than how the world is today and how we are functioning.
I recently enrolled in an 8-week mindfulness course in Toronto where I am learning things such as, mindful eating, mindful seeing, body scans, paying attention to breath, guided meditation and more. I did this because my standard response to stress is catastrophic and I do not mean this in a judging way.
Stress is an inevitable part of life, and you will experience it from time to time throughout your years. However, my response to stress and tension has become very toxic to my health physically. I needed to explore new ways of being to manage this healthily so that my whole body isn’t in pain! My point is that even something as simple as an exercise such as guided meditation, and by listening to the facilitator guiding the mediation can be so impactful to us. Some of us fall asleep, some of us follow along, some may zone the person out, some of us laugh at what they are saying ( that’s me, laughing in the corner like a crazy person Lol and I am always embarrassed). It’s exciting to me just how compelling listening to someone is to our minds, bodies, emotions and spirituality.
What I know is that not everyone can be let in. In fact, there are a lot of people who should not be let into your inner world, and if you choose to do that, they will mess up your garden, grow weeds, and eventually destroy a lot of the beautiful flowers you are trying to build for yourself. Discovering who is safe and who is not has taken me a long time to figure out and I am still a work in progress. Weak boundaries! The reason why the power of language is so the top of mind with me right now is that you form a sound judgment of character based on what a person says and how they act.
Do they say one thing and turn around and do another? Do they mean one thing one day and change their mind the next consistently? Do they speak about you to other people tainting their opinion of who you are? Do they gossip? Do they lack transparency? Do they always talk about their degrees and credentials? Do they ask you questions that aren’t any of their business? Do they pretend to have your best interest at heart? Do they purposefully say things that they expect a reaction out of you? Are you being HOOKED? Hmm….
Let’s face it. These people who do these things are not doing these things because of you. They are doing it because of their fears, threatened, insecurities, and internal chaos. It’s rarely about you 🙂
I am working on a brand new training program, and I am incredibly excited it because I am going to teach people who work in the corporate sector on the different types of toxic people in the workplace. I come with an array of stories from my personal experiences, the players I’ve grown to know and understand, and how to spot them straight on!
This is what fascinates me. Human behaviour. The way people think, why they do the things they do, and how they cover up their fears by putting on a mask. Stay tuned for a brand new topic on toxic players in the workplace. If you pay close enough attention to what people are saying, you could learn a lot about the person. Paying attention to language will help you in your careers, your dating lives, and your friendships.
Stay tuned for more information on my new training or send me an email at email@example.com if you want to chat 🙂
